The Department is managed by the Chief Health Inspector.
The Inspectorate comprises two Principal Health Inspectors, 4 Senior Health Inspectors, 14 Health Inspectors.
FUNCTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT
- • Organisation and supervision of waste collection, cleaning of roadside and storm water drains and eradication of environmental nuisances and control of rat proliferation.
- • Upkeep and maintenance of SSR Botanical Gardens, Town Hall Gardens, green space around the Town and Bigarade Cemetery.
- • Cleaning and Maintenance of Public Lavatories.
- • Management of the Market and Le Forum bi-weekly Fair.
- • Control and issue of Trade Licences for professional and commercial activities.
The Department implements all policies and decisions taken by the Public Health Committee.
THE DEPARTMENT COMPRISES THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS:
- • Scavenging / Cleaning
- • Municipal licences
- • Market / Traffic
- • Market Fairs
- • Environment
- • Parks & Gardens
- • Cemetery / Cremation Grounds
CLEANING OF DRAINS AND RIVULETS
- • At least thrice per year for the 20 km of rivers and rivulets of the town;
- • Cleaning of the 85 cross drains and roadside drains.
SWEEPING AND CLEANING OF ROADS AND WASTELANDS
- • Sweeping of the Town Centre throughout the day from 7 am to 8pm;
- • Sweeping of all roads and open drain, once at least on a fortnightly basis;
- • Spraying of herbicide in all the roads and lanes of the Town;
- • Weeding of roadside;
- • Ensuring cleanliness of barelands.
FORMULATION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ENVIRONMENT PROJECTS
- • Embellishment of strategic sites;
- • Creation of parks;
- • Landscaping projects.
FMANAGEMENT OF MARKET
- • Ensure food for sale is fit for consumption;
- • Maintain cleanliness of market at all times;
- • Ensure stall holders abide by all hygienic and other norms.
MANAGEMENT OF TRAFFIC CENTRES
- • Ensure a good standard of cleanliness within the premises;
- • Ensure fluidity of traffic flow in the compound;
- • Ascertain good hygienic standard in public toilets.
MANAGEMENT OF MARKET FAIRS
- • Fair Days: Wednesdays & Saturdays;
- • Ensure food sale is fit for consumption;
- • Maintain cleanliness of site and public toilets;
- • Ensure stall holders abide by all hygienic and other norms.
MANAGEMENT OF CEMETERY/ CREMATION/ CREMATION GROUNDS
- • Burial/Cremation procedures;
- • Maintenance of cleanliness.
MANAGEMENT OF PARKS/GARDEN AND GREEN SPACES
- • Trimming of lawn;
- • Planting of decorative plants and flowers;
- • Ensuring cleanliness of sites.
- • Control of illegal hawkers.
