The Welfare Department

The Welfare department provides services to the citizens in the field of education, culture, sports & leisure.

The facilities given to the public include, among others:

  1. Free access to Municipal Pre-Primary schools
  2. Free use of infrastructures such as:
    1. Football grounds
    2. Petanque Pitches
    3. Sports Complexes
    4. Childrens Recreational Parks
    5. Volley-Ball pitches
    6. Basket-Ball Pitches
    7. Social Halls

Aims & objectives of the Municipal Council

The aims & objectives of Municipal Council are to:

  1. Promote the social, economic, environmental and cultural well-being of the local community.
  2. Improve the overall quality of life of people in the local community.
  3. Ensure that services and facilities provided by the Council are accessible and equitably distributed.
  4. Ensure that resources are used efficiently and effectively to best meet the needs of the local community.
  5. Ensure transparency and accountability in decision-making.
  6. The promotion of sports development and the organization of sports activities, including the sponsoring and Patronage of any organization/agencycapable of representing the town or district at local, regional and international levels.
  7. The provision of infrastructure for leisure and cultural activities to the citizens and the organization of leisure, welfare , cultural, Socio-Culture and Socio-Religious activities.

Welfare Services Provided by the Council

Personnel

The Welfare department with a staff of 45 employees together with other departments of the Municipal Council caters for to the welfare of all the citizens of Curepipe.

The Welfare department makes provision for relevant and  adequate Social Services in the field of education, Culture, Sports and recreation.

Activities

The Welfare department is the main department responsible to meet the social, recreational, sports and cultural needs of the inhabitants. Needs are identified either by the Council or by people who express their needs  to the Council. The Council responds by:

  1. Organising the necessary activities
  2. Providing resources
  3. Granting donations & sponsorship for activities organized by associations and NGOs
  4. Collaborating with other agencies and Ministries.

The set of objectives are:

  1. To achieve a coordinated approach to planning & developing social infrastructures
  2. To create greater awareness about our social realities so as to help people to live more fully and effectively.
  3. To inculcate a culture of good responsible citizenship among the residents to involve more in community participation.
  4. To upgrade existing leisure and community facilities in deprived areas.
  5. To create new infrastructures and provide services in line with the socio-cultural, sports, Socio-Religious and leisure requirements of the different precints of the township.

The Welfare Department uses mostly the Community approach among other strategies in trying to achieve its goals and collaborate with community associations within its boundaries.

According to our Strategic Plan 2000 It is the duty of the Municipal Council to strengthen the hands of voluntary agencies doing community work in the field of social welfare, culture, sports and leisure. They should be encouraged to look upon themselves as equal partners in the combined effort to bring about improvement in the social welfare of the community

To facilitate its task, all associations of the township area are invited to be registered with the department. For the year 2010 we have some 68 Senior Citizen associations, 36 Women Associations, 28 Voluntary social organizations, 40 Religious associations, 31 Sports/Youth clubs, 12 Associations for disabled persons registered with the welfare department.
